Buoyed by spectacular opening day results for Twilight, Summit Entertainment has taken the widely anticipated step of greenlighting the sequel New Moon.

The vampire romance is estimated to have grossed $35.7m on Friday, an astonishing amount driven by record pre-sales. Approximately $7m of that amount comes from Thursday midnight screenings.

Heading into the weekend Twilight was expected to gross in the $60m region, however pundits have revised that amount to $75m based on first day results.

'I don't think any other author has had a more positive experience with the makers of her movie adaptation than I have had with Summit Entertainment.' Stephenie Meyer said. 'I'm thrilled to have the chance to work with them again on New Moon.'

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson star in Twilight as a high school girl and a vampire who fall in love.
