Famed British actress Susannah York has died from advanced bone marrow cancer at the age of 72.

Her son said she died at hospital in London on Saturday.

York was best known for her roles in 1960s and 1970s films such as Tom Jones, A Man For All Seasons, Battle of Britian, They Shoot Horses - Don’t They (for which she received an Oscar nomination) and Superman.

She won Best Actress at Cannes in 1972 for Robert Altman’s Images.

She was also a theatre veteran, TV actress (Casualty, Holby City), wrote two children’s books and campaigned against nuclear weapons.

York was born in London and trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art.

She is survived by her son and daughter and several grandchildren.
