Disney and Marvel Studios’ Captain America: The Winter Soldier topped the China box office during the week March 31-April 6, grossing $36.23m after just three days.

DreamWorks Animation’s Mr Peabody & Sherman came in second, according to figures from EntGroup, grossing $7.63m for a total of $15.51m after ten days. Aubrey Lam’s The Truth About Beauty, a plastic surgery-themed comedy, came in third on its opening weekend, grossing $5.86m after three days. Produced by Peter Ho-sun Chan’s We Pictures, the film stars Bai Baihe and Ronald Cheng.

DreamWorks’ Need For Speed took fourth position with a weekly haul of $5.76m. With a cumulative total of $65.08m, the car racing action drama is the second biggest Hollywood release of the year so far, behind The Hobbit: The Desolution Of Smaug, which took more than $74m.

The Monuments Men, directed by George Clooney, grossed $2.38m for a total of $7.35m and fifth place in the chart. Diao Yinan’s Black Coal, Thin Ice came in sixth with $2.26m. The Berlin Golden Bear winner has so far grossed $15.6m – a healthy result in China for an arthouse film.

Local horror sequel Death Is Here 3 was the only other opener last weekend, taking seventh place in the chart with $2.11m after three days.

Chinese-South Korea romantic comedy On The Way took eighth position with $1.35m for a total of $3.22m, while Lee Chi-ngai’s heist comedy Horseplay came in ninth with $1.12m for a total of $9.94m. Local movie Fighting rounded out the chart taking tenth position with $980,000 for a total of $11.67m.
