Chinese director Liu Jie’s De Lan won best film at this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival, while Vito Palmieri’s See You In Texas won the grand jury prize.

Liu’s rural tale revolves around a loan officer who travels to a remote village and strikes up a complicated relationship with a Tibetan woman. The director is currently working on Hide And Seek, a Chinese adaptation of a Korean thriller, co-financed by Village Roadshow Pictures Asia.

Palmieri’s See You In Texas tells the story of a young Italian woman who has to make difficult decisions when she is offered an opportunity to perfect her horse-riding skills on a ranch in Texas.

Among other winners, Finnish filmmaker Antti Jokinen picked up best director for Flowers Of Evil; Liu Ye won best actor for his performance in Cao Baoping’s Cock And Bull; and Naomi Fujiyama took best actress for Japanese filmmaker Jinji Sakamoto’s The Projects.

Emir Kusturica headed the jury, which also included Atom Egoyan, Hong Kong actress Karena Lam, Italian director Daniele Luchetti, Tibetan filmmaker Tseden Pema and Mauritanian filmmaker Abderrahmane Sissako.

In the Asian New Talent Awards, Indian filmmaker Raam Reddy’s Thithi won best film and best scriptwriter (Reddy and Eregowda), while Chen Yujie won best director for Lost Daughter (Taiwan).

Best actor went to Qin Yong for Nirvana (China) and best actress to Sun Yi for Pleasure.love (China). Thailand’s Puttinpong Aroonpheng won best cinematographer for The Island Funeral.

Sherwood Hu’s Lord Of Shanghai, an adaptation of Ying Hong’s popular novel, screened at the festival’s closing ceremony. Talent on the red carpet included Meg Ryan, Michelle Yeoh and Japanese musician Yoshiki, best known for metal band X Japan.

Best documentary: When Two Worlds Collide (Peru) directed by Heidi Brandenburg & Mathew Orzel.
