UK director Tom Hooper has been appointed jury president for the Golden Goblet Award at this year’s Shanghai International Film Festival (June 15-23).

The festival will also screen a selection of Hooper’s films in the “Tribute To Masters” section of its line-up. Hooper’s credits including Academy Award-winning films The King’s Speech and Les Miserables, which between them grossed more than $400m.

Previous SIFF jury presidents have included Luc Besson, Danny Boyle, Barry Levinson, Jean-Jacques Annaud, Wong Kar Wai, John Woo and Chen Kaige.

“The Shanghai International Film Festival joins those great festivals around the world devoted to maintaining the integrity of the motion picture as a timeless artistic medium and I am privileged to be a part of it,” Hooper said.

SIFF Organising Committee managing director Fu Wenxia said: “Tom Hooper is a director so well-known to the Chinese audience and two of his best films The King’s Speech and Les Miserables have both been screened in China.

“Concerned with both the artistic and commercial values of films, Hooper has achieved a perfect balance between the two aspects, which is also a constant aesthetic pursuit of the Golden Goblet Award of SIFF.”
