The Arts Council of Mongolia (ACM) is set to host the inaugural East Meets West Film Forum and Festival in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar from October 5-8.
ACM has invited filmmakers and film industry professionals from Asia, Europe and the US to the event, which is the first of its kind in Mongolia.
The event is backed by the Asia-Europe Foundation’s “Asia-Europe Cultural Partnerships Initiatives” programme and the Open Society Institute’s Arts + Culture Programme.
ACM said it was hosting the event in an attempt to “bring support and recognition from the global filmmaking community to Mongolia” as the county’s domestic film industry is struggling to make an impact at an international level.
The country which has a population of just over 3 million, has previously produced films such as Oscar-nominated documentary The Story Of The Weeping Camel, which was a co-production between Mongolia and Germany.
“There are virtually no international film events or festivals held in Mongolia and the local film market is saturated with Hollywood blockbusters and commercial films,” said ACM’s executive director Ariunaa Tserenpil.
“Neither filmgoers nor filmmakers have access to a balanced or diverse range of feature films nor documentaries that reflect current trends in the global film industry. By offering free public screenings of films from across Asia and Europe as part of East Meets West, ACM hopes to open up the film world a little more in Mongolia.”
International guest at the event include Thai filmmaker Anocha Suwichakornpong, French programmer and consultant Jeremy Segay, French producer Lucas Rosant, Korean director Min Kyu-dong and Nadja Jumah, managing director of German sales agent M-Appeal.
