Korean drama Sex Volunteer, directed by Cho Kyeong-duk, was awarded best film and best director in the Asian feature competition of the Silver Screen Awards at this year’s Singapore International Film Festival.
The film – about an organisation which offers sex to disabled people – has been invited to several festivals including Houston and Buenos Aires, and next month plays at the Milan International Film Festival which kicks off on May 5.
Best performance at the Silver Screen Awards was awarded to the entire cast of I Saw The Sun (Gunesi Gordum) by Turkish director Mahsun Kirmizigul, which also picked up the award for best cinematography. Indonesian director Riri Riza picked up the NETPAC Critics Award for The Dreamer (Sang Pemimpi).
In the Singapore Short Film Competition, Promises In December by Elgin Ho took best film and best director; Lincoln Chia’s Mu Dan took best performance for Li Xie and best cinematography, while a Special Mention went to Life With Ummu directed by Tanya Lai.
The festival, which ran April 15-24, opened with Bruce Beresford’s Mao’s Last Dancer and closed with Japanese director Miwa Nishikawa’s Dear Doctor, which won best screenplay and best supporting actress at this year’s Japan Academy Awards.
