Studiocanal and Beijing-based DMG Entertainment are teaming with James Cameron on a 3D re-release of Terminator 2.

The two companies will work with Cameron to supervise and produce the digitally re-mastered 3D conversion, using technology from StereoD. The 3D version of the film will be released globally in 2016, starting in China.

Terminator 2 is one of the most popular titles in Studiocanal’s 5,000-title strong library but has never received a theatrical release in China.

“We are very excited to be teaming up with DMG and James Cameron to breathe new life into T2 and bring it in 3D to cinema-goers in China,” said Studiocanal president, international distribution and marketing, Rodolphe Buet.

“This is consistent with our long-standing policy of carefully curating the over 5,000 titles of our masterpiece-filled catalogue and releasing them to new audiences in partnership with the greatest talents in the industry.”

DMG CEO Dan Mintz said: “T2 blew me away when I first saw it. For a whole new generation of fans, it is truly a chance to see the movie that really set the bar for action and effects that all the movies today are trying to top, in a completely new way – in the theatre and in 3D.”

DMG recently collaborated with Alcon Entertainment on Point Break, which is currently playing in China and select Asian markets. In China, where the film opened a full three weeks before the US, Point Break topped the box office in its first full week (Dec 7-13) and has grossed $31m after 10 days.
