Speaking at the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival, Game Of Thrones creator George R. R. Martin has acknowledged that he would like to round off the epic TV series with a feature film.

“I would love that,” Martin commented.

The author turned down early offers to make a film version of his fantasy novels but now believes that a big screen version could make the perfect culmination to the hugely popular HBO series.

“If we go seven or eight seasons and then the show is still big enough that we can get the $200 million to finance a huge epic movie to end it…sure!”

Martin said that discussions have already been held about a film version. “But that doesn’t mean it has been approved. Some people like the idea. Other people don’t like the idea.”

Martin, who is firmly in the ‘yes’ camp, pointed out that Game Of Thrones already has “the biggest cast in television” and the “biggest budget in television.” Each episode is reckoned to cost between $5 million and $6 million – and each season between $60 million and $70 million.

“But that’s still nothing to what Peter Jackson spends on a Lord Of The Rings movie or what any of these big, epic science fiction or fantasy movies have to spend. To go out with something big like that would be amazing.”

Premieres of new Game Of Thrones seasons have been held in such cinemas as Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and New York’s Lincoln Center. “The show looks great on a big screen, I mean a really big screen. It has cinematic values already,” Martin pointed out.

If a big screen finale to Game Of Thrones is greenlit, it won’t necessarily be in 3D.

“I don’t care about 3D,” the author stated. “It gives me a headache.”
