Fortissimo Films has picked up international rights to French Canadian filmmaker Guy Edoin’s Wetlands (aka Marecages), which premieres at the Venice Film Festival next month.
The film will screen in the International Critics’ Week at Venice before moving on to Toronto where it’s the opening film in the Canada First! Section.
Fortissimo will handle worldwide sales outside of Canada, where the film will be released by Métropole Films Distribution.
Written and directed by Édoin, and produced by Luc Vandal and Félize Frappier of Max Films, the film is set on a Canadian dairy farm, where a young woman is widowed and left to deal with a rebellious teenage son discovering his sexuality.
The cast includes Pascale Bussières, Gabriel Maillé, Luc Picard, François Papineau, Angèle Coutu, Denise Dubois.
The deal with Fortissimo was brokered by Frappier and Fortissimo’s senior vice president, Chris Paton.
“Following Xavier Dolan’s success, Guy is the latest talent to emerge from an exciting new generation of filmmakers from Québec. His film is a haunting exploration of love, forgiveness and redemption,” said Paton.
Max Films is a Montreal-based production and international sales company which has produced films such as Robin Aubert’s Crying Out, La Grande Seduction, written by Ken Scott and directed by Jean-François Pouliot and Maelström by Denis Villeneuve.
