Rock singer Sharleen Spiteri and UK TV actress Dawn Steele will head up the cast of Between Weathers, the first feature to be shot on the Shetland Islands since Michael Powell’s The Edge Of The World in 1939.

The film, about a remote Scottish island community’s fight against a corporate giant, is a joint venture between Shetland Arts Development Agency and B4Films, who have set up an LLP to finance and produce the film.

A new community interest company, Shetland Intellectual Property CIC, is also being set up to protect the film’s social purpose, whilst Shetland Arts is also donating access to its new post production centre in Mareel, which is due to open in Spring 2011 to coincide with Between The Weathers.

Shooting is due to begin next summer on the project, which will be directed and produced by Jim Brown of B4 Films. It will be Texas singer Sharleen Spiteri’s first foray into film acting.

Gwilym Gibbons, Director, Shetland Arts Development Agency, said; “Between Weathers LLP is a unique model for the delivery of this new social enterprise-led feature film. Our ambition is to ensure that Between Weathers can be a leading project for Shetland Arts to grow its portfolio of community-held IP through Shetland IP CIC and ensure that the benefit can be derived for the good of the Shetland community.”

Jim Brown, MD, B4Films, added; “The LLP is by far the most suitable business framework through which to develop and produce Between Weathers. We are excited to be working with Gwilym and Shetland Arts to make this project a reality and are delighted to have Sharleen and Dawn on board as the first raft of leading talent signed up to the project.”
