The Aviator has emerged as the front-runnerin the nominations for the forthcoming Orange British Academy Film Awards.

The Martin Scorsese directed film, which won the best dramaprize at last night's Golden Globes, received 14 BAFTA nominations, ahead of FindingNeverland and Vera Drake which both received 11 nominations each.

Foreign language films also performed strongly: House ofFlying Daggers received nine while The Motorcycle Diaries collectedseven nominations.

Kate Winslet makes two appearances in the best actressnominations for Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind and FindingNeverland. However, Golden Globe winners Hilary Swank and Annette Beningfailed to be recognised in the best actress category.

Jamie Foxx also has two nominations: best actor for Rayand best supporting actor for Collateral.

Mostof the films that received large numbers of nominations were sent out asscreener DVDs to BAFTA members, including Aviator, Finding Neverland andVera Drake. However, high profile films considered awards contendersthat were not sent out as screeners performed poorly: Sideways, forexample, received just one nomination in the screenplay category, while theacclaimed Million Dollar Baby failed to score a single nomination.

The Aviator's nominations include best film,the David Lean award for achievement in direction, original screenplay and bestactor for Leonardo DiCaprio.

Other strong performing films include Eternal Sunshine OfThe Spotless Mind and Collateral which both picked up sixnominations. Harry Potter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban has fournominations, as does biopic Ray

Five films have been shortlisted for The AlexanderKorda Award For The Outstanding British Film Of The Year: Dead Man's Shoes, HarryPotter And The Prisoner Of Azkaban, My Summer Of Love, Shaun Of The Dead andVera Drake.

The shortlist for the Orange Film of the Year, made up ofthe top 10 UK box office hits of 2004, is Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason,The Day After Tomorrow, Shrek 2,Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Spider-Man2, Troy, Shark Tale, I, Robot, Scooby Doo 2 and The Incredibles.

The Awards will be hosted for the fifth time by StephenFry and will take place on Saturday February 12 at the Odeon, LeicesterSquare. They will produced by Initial (part of Endemol UK) and broadcaston BBC ONE.
