Jodie Foster drew in a largely female crowd as Warner Bros' revenge thriller The Brave One opened top on an estimated $14m.

Foster, in her first lead role since Flightplan in 2005, stars as a radio host who turns vigilante after she is nearly beaten to death. Neil Jordan directed and Joel Silver produced.

Lionsgate's Western remake 3:10 To Yuma slipped to second on $9.2m for
$28.5m, while New Line's comedy Mr Woodcock with Billy Bob Thornton,
Seann William Scott and Susan Sarandon opened third on $9.1m.

The South Korean action romp D-War (aka Dragon Wars) was a massive hit
in its native country earlier this year but will struggle to make much of a theatrical mark here on the basis of its fourth place debut on $5.4m, despite the Los Angeles setting.

Elsewhere Sony's high school comedy Superbad raised its solid tally to $11.3m in the fifth weekend and ranks fifth, while Halloween limped past $50m for MGM and finished sixth.

Eastern Promises, David Cronenberg's latest feature that just won the Cadillac People's Choice award at Toronto, opened well on 15 screens to gross $552,000, which translates into approximately $36,800 per screen. The tale of Russian mobsters in London expands wide next weekend.

There were two other notable limited launches: Warner Independent Pictures' war drama In The Valley OF Elah with Tommy Lee Jones and Charlize Theron grossed $138,000 from nine, while Sony's musical Across The Universe starring Evan Rachel Wood and Jim Sturgess took $685,000 on less than 25.

Next weekend's wide releases are Sony's Resident Evil: Extinction starring Milla Jovovich as the zombie hunter; Lionsgate's comedy Good Luck Chuck with Jessica Alba and Dane Cook; and Universal's comedy Sydney White starring Amanda Bynes.
