Universal's The Hulk turned its studio rivals green with envy over the weekend as thenumber one comic book adaptation clobbered the June opening record with anestimated $62.6m.

Ang Lee's film sees Eric Bana as the troubled research scientistprone to unseemly temper tantrums. Jennifer Connelly and Nick Nolte co-star,while the Hulk himself is computer-generated.

It beat the previous record June opening, set by New Line's AustinPowers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, which took $54.9m in 1999.

Lee's film averaged $17,103 from 3,660 venues and elicited somestrong reviews. Studio executives said it appealed equally to filmgoers agedunder and over 25 years.

Down one place to second was Disney/Pixar's Finding Nemo, which added $20.5m for a stunning $228mrunning total in its fourth week.

In more good news for Universal, the street racing sequel 2Fast 2 Furious slippedone to third but passed $100m in its third week, adding $10.3m for $102.1m.

The studio's comedy Bruce Almighty took $10m for $210.7m in its fifth week,falling one to fourth.

Warner Bros/Franchise Pictures' romantic comedy Alex & Emma opened seventh on $6.2m. Luke Wilson andKate Hudson star in a critically mauled tale of a writer who falls in love withhis stenographer.

Directed by Rob Reiner, the film averaged $2,701 from 2,310venues.

Twentieth Century Fox's From Justin To Kelly opened to dire reviews in 11th place on$2.9m.

The comedy musical averaged $1,436 from 2,001 theatres and chartsthe rise of two winners from the American Idol TV talent show. It was directed byRobert Iscove.

Next week's releases include Columbia's Charlie's Angels: FullThrottle and FoxSearchlight's zombie thriller 28 Days Later.
