The Queen's royal progress in this year's awards season was matched at this year's Orange British Academy awards by the grand success of Last King Of Scotland.

Stephen Frears' The Queen was named best film at the ceremony at London's Royal Opera House with another best actress winner to the unstoppable Helen Mirren, who now has the chance to complete a coveted Bafta, Globes and Oscar hat-trick.

The Last King Of Scotland was named best British film with best actor honours for Forest Whitaker. Peter Morgan and Jeremy Brock's adapted screenplay was also recognised.

Neither The Queen or Last King swept the board, with prizes spread around several films.

The best director prize went to Paul Greengrass for United 93. Accepting the award, he said: 'Cinema must deal with the way the world is and the dangers We need it very much now.'

Andrea Arnold, meanwhile, took the best British director for Red Road.

Little Miss Sunshine was a double awards winner for Michael Arndt's best original screenplay and best supporting actor for Alan Arkin. Best supporting actress was Jennifer Hudson for Dreamgirls. Neither Arkin or Hudson were present to collect their awards.

The international film honours went to Pan's Labyrinth.

Casino Royale had picked up an unprecedented nine Bafta nominations, but picked up just two masks: the best sound prize and the Orange Rising Star award for Eva Green.

It was a night of new starts for BAFTA: a new host in UK broadcaster Jonathan Ross, and a new venue in Covent Garden's Royal Opera House. The move increased the capacity of the awards, and the lengthy red carpet added a real sense of occasion.
