THINKFilm International has taken worldwide sales rights (excluding Latin America and Italy) to Hector Babenco's The Past (El Pasado).

The film will have its world premiere in the Masters section of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Gael Garcia Bernal stars as a young translator going through a divorce, whose former wife become obsessive and out of control. Babenco, Marta Goes, Mariana Chaud and Federico Leon adapted the script from Argentine writer Alan Pauls's novel. The project, for Argentina's KNS Films and Babenco's Brazil-based HB Filmses, shot mostly in Buenos Aires.

THINKFilm's Toronto slate also includes Martin Gero's Young People Fucking, which will open Canada First!, and Daniele Luchetti's Italian hit My Brother Is An Only Child (Mio Fratello E Figlio Unico), which will play in the World Cinema section.

THINKFilm International head Eve Schoukroun said: 'We are incredibly excited to be working with Hector Babenco, Gael Garcia Bernal and producer Oskar Kramer on The Past. Hector has crafted an incredibly powerful film that I'm sure will delight Toronto audiences and the international buyer community. To now have three films screening in Toronto really demonstrates how ThinkFilm International has become a one stop shop for some of the most original voices in independent cinema.'
