TLA Entertainment’s acquisitions director Derek Curl and investors have purchased a 75% controlling interest in TLA Releasing.

The sale includes both the domestic operation in North America and the UK subsidiary. Curl will become the president and CEO of TLA Releasing, a newly formed LLC.

TLA Releasing will now be operated by filmmakers. Raymond Murray will stay on with TLA Releasing as acquisitions advisor.

“TLA Releasing has proven, again and again, over many years, that ‘independence’ can translate to great success,” Curl said. “My first distribution deal was with TLA and that gave me great confidence to go forward with a career in movies and now I am honoured to have the opportunity to continue the spirit of the brand and be part of its ongoing success story.”

TLA Entertainment was established in 1981 and launched a distribution operation in 2000 through the TLA Releasing and Danger After Dark labels, which established the division’s alternative cinema credentials.

“The Entertainment Group’s plan is to focus our energies and resources on our core business, which is being a prominent home entertainment e-tailer and mail order company,” Murray added.
