The Toronto International Film Festival has announced dozens more films in its programme, across the Vanguard, Midnight Madness, City to City and Kids strands.

In the cutting-edge, genre-bending Vanguard strand, world premieres will include Thai director Pen-ek Ratanaruang’s Headshot, about a hitman with an unusual injury; and Jean-Baptiste Leonetti’s Carré Blanc, about orphans who become a couple trying to keep their love alive in a world of monsters.

There are nine world premieres announced as part of the Midnight Madness programme, including new films from films from Bobcat Goldthwait, The Blair Witch Project director Eduardo Sanchez, Japanese cult director Katsuhito Ishii, and director-duo Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo.

This year’s City to City programme is dedicated to Buenos Aires, and programmer Kate Lawrie Van de Ven said: “There’s a rich array of cinematic styles emerging across Buenos Aires, from more experimental narratives to sly genre reworks, and we’re excited to bring a sampling of that diversity to TIFF.” The symposium about Buenos Aires will be held on Sept 13.

Two world premieres among the Argentine films are Fatherland, about Argentine modern history as tied to writers buried in Recoleta Cemetary; and Caprichosos de San Telmo, about working-class musicians and dancers.

In the Kids programme, world premieres are of Bess Kargman’s ballet documentary First Position, Japanese film A Letter to Momo, and animation A Monster In Paris.
