New LineCinema's The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers has become the fifth highest grossingworldwide film of all time with a cumulative box office to date of $910m.

Making the announcementtoday (Apr 24) Rolf Mittweg, the company's president and chief operatingofficer of worldwide distribution and marketing, hailed the achievement as a"landmark moment for both our studio and this trilogy."

The secondinstalment in Peter Jacksonis trilogy adaptation of J R RTolkien's fantasy classic recently overtook its predecessor, TheFellowship Of The Ring,which is seventh in the all-time list on a worldwide gross of $861m.

"Thisbreakthrough speaks to the commitment and ingenuity of our teams here andabroad, and ultimately about Peter Jackson's magnificent film,"Mittweg said in a statement.

"We lookforward to the worldwide release of The Return Of The King, the third and final film, on December17th of this year, which will be the culmination of this unprecedented andinfinitely rewarding endeavour."

The Two Towersis fifth in worldwide rankings after Titanic ($1.8bn), Harry Potter And theSorcerer's Stone($976m), Star Wars: Episode 1 - The Phantom Menace ($926m) and Jurassic Park ($920m).
