United InternationalPictures (UIP) will distribute Kevin Smith's Clerks II in the UK. The deal was official confirmed as UIP set thebelated sequel to Smith's 1994 cult hit for a Sept 22 release in the territory.

Clerks IIsaw its world premiere out of competition as Cannes in May and will receive its British debut on Aug 18at this year's Edinburgh Film Festival, where Smith will also take part in aQ&A on Aug 19.

The comedy follows thelatest adventures of clerks Dante (Brian O'Halloran)and Randal (Jeff Anderson).

Opening two weeks ago in North America, Clerks II took $10.1m in its first weekend on 2,150 screens.The Weinstein Company film, which is released through MGM Studios in North America, has taken $18.5mafter ten days on release.

The original Clerks released in the UK through Artificial Eye on May 5, 1995 on five screens. It went on to gross $635,000(£341,788).

The sequel will go out onapproximately 100 prints from Sept 22 in the UK, launching against this week'sKorean record-breaker The Host(Optimum Releasing), portmanteau film Eros(Artificial Eye), Keane (SodaPictures) and wide releases of Alfonso Cuaron's Children Of Men (UIP). Curtis Hanson's Lucky You (Warner Bros), Bart Freundlich's Trust The Man (Icon Film Distribution) and Stephen Frears' The Queen(Pathe Distribution).
