New York-based Visit Films has acquired worldwide rights to Adolfo Alix Jr's Filipino drama Adela ahead of its premiere in the Toronto International Film Festival's Contemporary World Cinema section next month.

The film tells the story of a former radio personality celebrating her 80th birthday in the slums of Manila who reflects on her lonely life. Anita Linda stars and Arleen Cuevas produced Alix Jr's follow-up to the Philippine's 2007 foreign language Oscar submission Donsol.

'This film marks a significant move forward for Visit,' Visit Films partner Sylvain Tron said. 'We have acquired a top tier international project from a director whose first film was the Filipino entry for the Academy Awards Foreign Language category.'

Last week Visit Films announced it had acquired the Venice Film Festival title Zero Bridge from director Tariq Tapa.
