The Weinstein Company has picked up key territories to Wong Kar Wai’s Berlinale opener The Grandmaster, taking all US and English-speaking Canadian territories from Annapurna as well as UK, Australian and New Zealand rights from Wild Bunch.

Wong’s martial arts epic takes place in 1930s China and tells the story of Bruce Lee’s mentor Ip Man, played by Tony Leung Chiu Wai.

Ziyi Zhang, Chang Chen, Zhao Benshan, Xiao Shengyang and Song Hye Kyo round out the cast. Wong, Zou Jingzhi, and Xu Haofeng wrote the screenplay

The film has already grossed more than $50m in China and has become the biggest box office hit in Wong’s career.

Jacky Pang and Wong produced and the film’s financier Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures served as executive producer.
