Working Title Films is believed to be courting Billy Elliot director Stephen Daldry for a drama about a group of young backpackers travelling abroad.

Under the working title The Backpacker Movie, the picture would be the first to emerge from a three-year deal which Daldry signed with Working Title in November last year after they collaborated on his hit debut. The project, currently in development, would also re-unite Daldry with Billy Elliot producer Jon Finn, who recently stepped down as joint head of Working Title's low-budget division WT2 to focus on hands-on producing for the company.

Under his three-year deal with Working Title, Daldry committed to direct at least two films for the UK company, but he remains free to work with other producers. This year, he directed The Hours, starring Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Julianne Moore, for US producer Scott Rudin.

The ex-theatre director is also attached to FilmFour and Starfield Productions' The Hiding Room, a romantic drama set in 1940s Palestine. Working Title was not available for comment.
