The president of the Casting Society Of America expressed gratitude following the Academy’s announcement of a casting directors branch on Wednesday [31].
“The Casting Society Of America (CSA) is tremendously grateful to the Academy Of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences for acknowledging the vital contributions made by casting directors to film,” said Richard Hicks.
“To be recognised with the creation of a casting branch is something the CSA has long worked for, and to be seen on a par with the other filmmaking crafts is both humbling and gratifying. Thank you, Academy.”
Academy board members approved the decision at Tuesday’s [30] meeting. Special elections in the autumn will select three governors.
The new branch brings the total number of branches to 17. Casting directors were first invited to Academy membership more than 30 years ago, when many of them were admitted as members-at-large.
“Casting directors play an essential role in the filmmaking process,” said newly elected Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “Their inclusion on our board will only broaden our perspective and help ensure that the Academy continues to accurately reflect the state of filmmaking today.”
