Avatar, An Education and The Hurt Locker have each received eight nominations for this year’s Orange British Film Academy Awards, including best film and best director.

Lone Scherfig’s An Education was also nominated for Outstanding British film, alongside An Education, Fish Tank, In the Loop, Moon and Nowhere Boy. Meanwhile directors Duncan Jones and Sam Taylor Wood also picked up nominations in the outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer for Moon and Nowhere Boy.

Neill Blomkamp’s District 9, picked up seven nominations including best director and best adapted screenplay, while Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds and Jason Reitman’s Up In The Air both received six nominations.

Peter Jackson’s The Lovely Bones picked up two nominations for best actress for Saoirse Ronan and best supporting actor for Stanley Tucci; while Rob Marshall’s musical Nine also failed to pick up any major nominations scoring just one for hair and make-up.

In the lead actor category, Golden Globe winner Jeff Bridges has been nominated alongside George Clooney for Up In The Air, Jeremy Renner for The Hurt Locker and British contenders Colin Firth for his performance in Tom Ford’s A Single Man and Andy Serkis, for his portrayal of punk singer Ian Dury in Sex&Drugs&Rock& Roll.

British actress of the moment Carey Mulligan, who is also up for the Orange Rising Star Award, heads up the nominations in the lead actress category for her performance in An Education. Her fellow contenders will be Ronan, Gabourey Sidibe (Precious), Meryl Streep (Julie & Julia) and Audrey Tatou (Coco Before Chanel).

Meanwhile, Broken Embraces, Coco Before Chanel, Let The Right One In, A Prophet and The White Ribbon Film will fight it out for the Film Not In The English Language award.
