Formerly known as Merton Studios, the newest addition to the UK studio sector is to be officially launched today by London mayor Boris Johnson.
The South London studio, which until last year played host to UK TV series The Bill, was bought from Fremantle Media in September 2010 by investor Panther Securities PLC. It will now be headed up by Piers Read & John Brennan.
The newly refurbished 220,000-square-foot studios will have four stages; two stages of approximately 8,000 square feet and two smaller green screen studios of approximately 2,000 square feet, one of which is due to open this summer.
Also on site will be production offices, 2D and 3D post production suites and 50 purpose built “location” sets including a prison, police station, court room, pub and a specially built “House of Commons” set, which was used last month in the shooting of upcoming feature The Iron Lady starring Meryl Streep.
The studio will also provide a base for a number of media companies, including 3D production services company Pro3D, who will provide a dedicated stereoscopic post production training facility dedicated to CineForm Neo3D.
The development is part of the continued promotion by South London Boroughs for filming in this area. The official launch of the studios will take place tonight at an event hosted by London’s major Boris Johnson.
