OCTOBER 5 UPDATE: On course for a possible $180m-plus global opening weekend, Warner Bros’ Joker has climbed to $57.2m after three days at the international box office, rising to $97.1m worldwide factoring in the $39.9m North American tally through Friday.

The film opened top in the UK on $4.7m to claim 77% market share of the top five in the studio’s biggest launch day of the year to date in the territory.

Mexico generated $4.2m for 81% share and the second biggest opening day of all time for the studio behind Batman v Superman; Japan delivered $1.9m for the highest DC opening day ever and the studio’s highest of the year so far; and Spain produced $1.4m for 71% share and the biggest opening day for a Warner Bros film this year.

Studio executives will report full weekend results on Sunday.

OCTOBER 4 REPORT: Warner Bros’ Joker has raced to an early $24.6m from 47 international markets in its first two days at the box office, powered by strong debuts in Russia, Australia, Italy and Brazil on Thursday.

Todd Phillips’ supervillain origins story starring Oscar contender Joaquin Phoenix ranks number one everywhere as it heads into more than two dozen new markets on Friday including the UK, Spain, Japan and Mexico.

The early worldwide tally stands at $38.3m and counting after the tentpole earned a record $13.3m in October previews on Thursday night in North America, where the tentpole is expected to break October opening weekend records.

Featuring in Thursday’s $18.7m international haul ($19m including previews) was Russia on $1.8m and 82% market share of the top five for the studio’s second highest opening day of the year to date behind It: Chapter Two.

Australia generated $1.5m and 60% share; Italy $1.2m and 79% share for the studio’s third highest opening day in 2019; and Brazil $1m ($1.5m including previews) for 85% share and the highest opening day for the studio so far this year.

In other highlights, UAE produced $896,000 for the studio’s second highest opening day ever behind Batman V Superman; Taiwan delivered $582,000 for a 78% share and the best opening day for the studio so far in 2019; and Peru generated $563,000 for 88% share for the same accolade as Taiwan.

Joker maintained momentum in South Korea as it added $4.3m in its second day to claim 52% share and rise to $6.6m. Indonesia and India delivered $791,000 for $1.6m, and $582,000 for $1.5m, respectively.

It: Chapter Two has grossed $228.5m, Blinded By The Light $1.5m from Warner Bros territories, The Goldfinch $3.1m, and Annabelle Comes Home $153.9m.

Fox’s Ad Astra was the international box office champion last session and has reached $59.7m through Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International as it heads into its penultimate market Bolivia, ahead of next weekend’s debut in Peru. Globally the sci-fi has amassed $98.2m and was on crouse to cross $100m on Thursday or Friday.

Abominable from DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studios ruled global box office last weekend and stands at $13.9m internationally through Universal Pictures International (UPI) and $39m worldwide. The family adventure ventures into a further 15 markets this weekend, including Russia, Italy, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, all of which have traditionally rewarded top-notch animation.

Latest numbers on other UPI releases put Downton Abbey on $54.5m, Danny Boyle’s Yesterday on $71.4m, Good Boys on $24.5m, and Hobbs & Shaw on $584.3m.

Sony Pictures Releasing International’s Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood from Quentin Tarantino stands at $220.6m, of which $218m hails from Sony markets and $2.6m from Bona Film in China. The Angry Birds Movie 2 has reached $85.3m

Millennium Media’s Rambo: First Blood stands at $28.7m and has amassed more than $2.7m in the UK through Lionsgate UK, $3.3m in Germany through Universum (owned by Fred Kogel’s recently named German media group Leonine), and $2.2m in Brazil through California Filmes.

Angel Has Fallen has amassed $59.3m, of which more than $8.9m comes from the UK via Lionsgate UK, more than $4.2m from Australia and New Zealand through Roadshow, and more than $4.1m from Germany through Telepool.
