‘Joker’

OCTOBER 7 UPDATE: Joker has demolished October opening weekend records as Warner Bros executives on Monday confirmed the tentpole debuted on $248.2m worldwide and $152.2m international, both of which beat the previous marks set by Venom a year ago.

WARNER BROS PICTURES INTERNATIONAL

UPDATE: Led by a stunning $16.1m (Won 19.4bn) debut in South Korea and $15.4m (£12.6m) in the UK where the film claimed 76% market share of the top five releases, Joker ranked as the number one Hollywood release in all 73 territories, and established the biggest Warner Bros debut in 2019 in 55 territories, the biggest October opening weekend in 32, the biggest opening weekend for a DC film in nine, and the biggest international launch on IMAX on $9m.

Todd Phillips’ supervillain origins story starring Oscar contender Joaquin Phoenix opened number one everywhere and ranks as the number one film in Asia, where it set the fourth-highest opening weekend by any Warner Bros release in the region, and also ranks top across Europe and Latin America, where in both cases it set the studio’s biggest launch of the year-to-date. The $96m North American opening weekend also set an October record.

Besides South Korea, Mexico was one of the territories that generated a record October debut on $13.4m (Ps 264.7m). Others included Brazil on $7.3m (R$30.2m), Australia on $6.6m (A$9.7m), Spain on $4.8m (€4.5m), and UAE on $2.8m (AED 10.4m).

Joker delivered the studio’s best opening for the year-to-date in 55 territories, among them Russia on $10.3m (Rbl 670m), Japan on $7m (¥755.7m), Italy on $7m (€6.4m), and Indonesia on $6.1m (IDR 87.2bn) for 93% share and the third biggest opening for a DC film.

Elsewhere, the supervillain produced $4m (INR 281m) in India, where it is tracking to deliver the second-highest opening weekend for a DC film behind Batman V Superman, and $3m (NT$ 93.4m) in Taiwan. Joker opens this week in its remaining six territories including France on October 9 and Germany on October 10. 

It: Chapter Two added an estimated $5.7m from 78 markets and climbed to $234.8m at the international box office, and $436.9m worldwide.

CHINA UPDATE

Two titans progressed well in China as each added approximately $100m. My People, My Country earned $100.7m for $286.9m and is an anthology of seven short stories featuring work by Chen Kaige and Guan Hu. True-life drama The Captain directed by Andrew Lau brought in a further $100.4m for $250.5m.

UNVERSAL PICTURES INTERNATIONAL

UPDATE: Abominable from DreamWorks Animation and Pearl Studios brought in $14.8m from 43 Universal territories as the early running total climbed to $28.9m, while Pearl Studios reported an $11.2m debut in China. The results combined for a $26m weekend and a $40.1m overal international tally, as worldwide box office reached $77.9m. The family release opened in Russia on $4.6m and Italy on $862,000, and added $1.3m for $4.1m in Mexico after two weekends, and $1.2m for $4.2m in Australia after three.

Downton Abbey added $6.9m for $62.2m, and stands at $135.8m worldwide. The UK was the film’s top holdover yet again, generating $1.8m for $27.7m after four weekends.

WALT DISNEY STUDIOS MOTION PICTURES INTERNATIONAL

UPDATE: Fox / New Regency’s sci-fi Ad Astra added $7.6m from 47 markets for a $68m international running total and stands at $6.9m in both the UK and France, and $5.5m in Japan.

PARAMOUNT PICTURES INTERNATIONAL

Ang Lee’s action thriller Gemini Man starring Will Smith and Mary Elizabeth Winstead launched at number one in each of its first five markets, earning $7m and debuting in France and on Germany on $3m apiece. 3D+ box office represented 49% of the total weekend box office, and the film rolls out next weekend in 54 markets including the UK, Australia, Russia, South Korea, Brazil, and Mexico.

Dora And The Lost City Of Gold used a $2.5m weekend haul to reach $50.2m and stands at $3.2m after three in Australia, and $7.5m in the UK after eight. The family adventure opens in Germany this week. Crawl has slithered to $50.1m and debuts in Japan this week.

SONY PICTURES RELEASING INTERNATIONAL

UPDATE: Columbia Pictures’ Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood added $3.3m from 55 markets to reach $224.3m, and $363.9m worldwide. The Angry Birds Movie 2 earned $4.6m from 50 for $90.1m with France to come on October 16.
