Cold War cinematographer Łukasz Żal discusses his working process with Pawel Pawlikowski, and his inspirations for the look of the film.

The 1950s romance premiered at Cannes 2018, where it picked up the best director prize, and has continued with an awards run that included four prizes at the European Film Awards in December and four nominations at the 2019 Baftas.
Żal also shot Pawlikowski’s previous feature Ida with Ryszard Lenczewski; the pair received numerous accolades for their work including best cinematography nominations at the Baftas and Oscars in 2015.
