Moon, by UK director Duncan Jones, won the Golden Athena for best film at the 15th Athens International Film Festival on Sunday (September 27).

The awarded was handed out by the European Youth Jury, formed by nine film and drama students aged between 18 and 25 years old from across the European Unions.

Fredrik Eldfeldtn won the award for best director for the Flickan (The Girl), which also received the Audience Award, while the best screenplay award went to Jesse Armstrong, Simon Blackwell Armando Iannucci, Ian Martin and  Tony Roche British film, In The Loop.

A second international jury formed by Screen International’s Fionnuala Halligan, Variety’s Leslie Felperin, Les Inrockubtibles’ Geraldine Sarratia and legendary Greek music producer Yiannis Petrides, judged films in the Music and Film section.

The jury gave a Golden Athena to US feature Until The Light Takes Us by Audrey Ewell and Aaron Aites.

For the first time, the festival had a competition section dedicated to local films, awarding three Golden Athenas. The award for best director was shared by Panayiotis Karamitsos for Tenderness and Argyris Papadimitropoulos for Bank Bang. Thanassis Tsaltabasis won the best new actor award for his role in I-4: Loufa & Apallagi, and the best new actress Rasmi Soukouli for her role in, Tenderness.

Attendance for the twelve-day event rose to 55,000, a 10% increase from last year.
