EXCLUSIVE: Voltage Pictures has added another title to its Cannes war chest, taking international rights to the coming-of-age dance film Breaking Through. Paradigm represents North America.
Step Up: All In writer John Swetnam, whose credits include Warner Bros summer release Into The Storm, will direct from his own screenplay and produces.
Breaking Through centres on Casey Wright, a 21-year-old small town girl with dreams of stardom and celebrity.
When she becomes an overnight sensation after a Hollywood talent scout spots her hip-hop dance videos online, Casey’s popularity takes off and she is forced to reassess what matters most in life.
Breaking Through is described as being in the vein of Step Up and Save The Last Dance and in the words of people close to the project, “bridges the gap between film, music, dance and the internet.”
BB Films Productions’ Uri Singer and Fabio Golombek will produce alongside Mike Jackson of Get Lifted Film Company and the Perimeter Group’s Luis Fragali. Multiple Grammy-winner John Legend is on board as executive producer. Mad Horse Films also produces.
The film will start production in Los Angeles on August 11. Voltage chief Nicolas Chartier brokered the deal with Singer and Ben Weiss of Paradigm on behalf of the producers.
Chartier’s sales slate includes Eli Roth psychothriller Knock Knock starring Keanu Reeves that is currently shooting in Chile; Good Kill starring Ethan Hawke, January Jones and Bruce Greenwood; and the Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried and Aaron Paul drama Fathers & Daughters.
