David Fincher’s The Social Network will receive its world premiere on September 24 when it opens the 48th Annual New York Film Festival.

Aaron Sorkin wrote the screenplay about how Harvard undergraduate Mark Zuckerberg invented Facebook, became the youngest billionaire in history, spawned a communication revolution, and encountered personal and legal complications along the way.

Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, and Justin Timberlake star and Sony will release in North America on October 1.

Scott Rudin, Dana Brunetti, Michael De Luca and Cean Chaffin produced. Sorkin’s script is based on the book The Accidental Billionaires by Ben Mezrich.

“David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin are a director-writer team, like Lumet and Chayefsky before them, that make this movie not only of the moment, but reflective of larger cultural issues as well, and confirm their position at forefront of contemporary cinema,” Richard Pena, selection committee chair and programme director at the Film Society Of Lincoln Center, said.

The New York Film Festival runs from September 24 to October 10.
