The North American premiere of Julie Taymor’s The Tempest will screen as the centerpiece film at the 48th New York Film Festival on October 2.

Helen Mirren stars as the sorceress Prospera after Taymor switched the gender of one of Shakespeare’s most memorable characters. Cast members include Chris Cooper, Alan Cumming, Djimon Hounsou, Alfred Molina, Russell Brand and Felicity Jones.

“Julie Taymor is one of the boldest, most innovative artists working in American theatre and film, and her elegant adaptation of The Tempest is a perfect illustration of her unique artistry,” Richard Pena, selection committee chair and programme director of The Film Society Of Lincoln Center, said.

Touchstone Pictures will release the Miramax Film on December 10 in New York and Los Angeles. The festival is scheduled to run from September 24 to October 10.
