AMBI Distribution has added Colombian auteur Ciro Guerra’s upcoming drama Waiting For The Barbarians starring Johnny Depp to its AFM sales slate.

AMBI Distribution will commence talks with worldwide buyers in Santa Monica next week on the project, which is about to start shooting in Morocco and Italy and also stars Mark Rylance and Robert Pattinson.

The move comes after Depp and Andrea Iervolino of AMBI Distribution parent company AMBI Media Group announced a producing partnership and said Waiting For The Barbarians would be their first project.

Guerra co-directed this year’s Cannes Directors’ Fortnight opener Birds Of Passage, and Colombian foreign-language Oscar nominee Embrace Of The Serpent.

Screen first reported Depp’s involvement on the J.M. Coetzee adaptation in Cannes. Waiting For The Barbarians centres on a servant to the Empire working in a small frontier town who undergoes a crisis of conscience and is charged with treason. Rylance will portray the hapless magistrate, while Pattinson is the warrant officer dispatched to deal with him, and Depp plays a sinister colonel.

Iervolino’s blockchain based social entertainment platform TaTaTu is financing the feature, and produces alongside Iervolino and Monika Bacardi’s AMBI Media Group, and Michael Fitzgerald and Olga Segura.
