The 14th Beijing Screenings will be held from Sept 7-10 tin Beijing with up-and-coming filmmaker Kong Lingchen’s City Monkey being the opening film of the 4-day film market, the event’s organizer China Film Group and China Film Promotion International announced.
The Beijing Screenings is an annual showcase of mainland Chinese films to international buyers and producers. This year the event will be showcasing 60 Chinese films to international buyers.
City Monkey is Kong’s second film and is set in contemporary Beijing, about the mother-son relationship between a parkour enthusiast teenager and his worrying single mother; it premiered at the Shanghai International Film Festival.
Also screening are Chow Yun-Fat-starring Confucius, romantic comedy Go Lala Go, Zhang Yang’s drama Driverless and Liu Jie’s award-winning Deep In the Clouds. The film, set in the remote Lisu tribe in southwest China about a forbidden romance and the tribe’s migration from their hometown, was awarded three prizes: the Best Director and Jury Grand Prix and Best Music award at the 13th Shanghai International Film Festival’s Golden Goblet Awards.
Apart from the four-day screenings, there will be a symposium on the international market of Chinese-language films. Attendees of Beijing Screenings include Motion Picture Association Asian region manager Mike Ellis and professor Stanley Rosen of University of Southern California’s East Asian Studies Center.
