Disney

Tumbling several records, the latest Marvel superhero outing Avengers: Infinity War posted a massive four-day £29.4m opening, including £23.1m Fri-Sun.

The film dominated the marketplace over the weekend. A total of 78% of UK cinema audiences opted for Avengers, propelling the film to break the record for the UK’s biggest ever Saturday with £9.2m.

The film’s Friday-Sunday total of £23.1m is the biggest for a superhero film and the third biggest overall, only narrowly behind Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows Part 2 (£23.75m) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens (£24.33m).

The £29.4m figure marks the biggest April opening of all time in the UK.

Spectre remains the biggest overall opening of all time on £41.3m but that film amassed a huge £21.3m in previews due to it having an extended seven-day opening period.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the only other film to have a larger overall opening, with £33.9m. Avengers: Infinity War landed third in that chart, ahead of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which had a four-day opening of £28m.

Also for Disney’s Marvel canon, Black Panther passed £50m this week, adding £184,000 over its eleventh weekend to take it to £50.2m.

Studiocanal

UK weather was back to its rainy best this weekend following last week’s heatwave, and despite the dominance of The Avengers, several titles across the rest of the box office benefitted.

Studiocanal’s The Guernsey Literary And Potato Peel Pie Society was up 19%, adding £960,219. That takes it to a running total of £3m.

Paramount

A Quiet Place added £920,000 this weekend for £9.87m to date.

Warner Bros

Rampage added £735,000 for a cume total £7.8m, while Ready Player One added a further £202,000 for £15.9m to date.

Sony Pictures

Peter Rabbit was up 20% on last weekend with £585,000, taking the film to £39.63m. The family animation looks set to cross £40m over the forthcoming bank holiday weekend.

Universal

Truth Or Dare added £246,336 this weekend, taking it to £2.2m to date.

Blockers is now up to £3.9m while The Leisure Seeker is up to £288,267 after its second weekend.

Trafalgar Releasing

Event cinema release Cendrillon - Met Opera 2018 grossed £211,327 from 203 reported sites this weekend, a screen average of £1,041.

Altitude

Michael Pearce’s UK thriller Beast opened to £127,000 from its 82 locations this weekend, with a screen average of £1,546.

Adding to £38,000 previews, the film’s overall opening is being reported as £166,000.

That’s close to being on a par with Lady Macbeth, the fellow UK independent production released successfully by Altitude last year, which began with a £152,000 opening weekend and ended up grossing £811,298.
