Screen rounds up the biggest independent movers and shakers on the international scene

IM Global’s local smash The Inbetweeners Movie posted the biggest international debut for any non-US film this year, taking $21.7m from 415 screens at a colossal average of $47,936 in the UK.

While the film is assured a huge UK take, the big question now is whether it will travel well, with deals already confirmed for Germany (Square One), France (French Connection), Australia (Village Roadshow), Canada (Maple), Italy (Eagle Pictures), Spain (Aurum) and Scandinavia (Nordisk), but no US deal as yet.

Comedy-Romance If You Are The One 2 was the last film to gross as much on debut when it made $31.7m at the end of December in China.

Bona Entertainment’s sequel Overheard 2 was the second non-US film in the top five this week, grossing $13.5m from 1616 screens in China. The Hong Kong crime-thriller, sees most of the original players return for the sequel with Alan Mak and Felix Chong writing and directing, Derek Yee producing and Lau Ching Wan, Louis Koo and Daniel Wu all starring again. However, this time round the three leads play different roles in a stock-market based thriller.

NuImage’s 3D action Conan The Barbarian opened in 19 (the majority of its markets) territories last weekend for an underwhelming $11.2m from 3,390 screens and a mediocre average of $3,295.

The Marcus Nispel-directed film, not a sequel to the Arnold Schwarzenegger film of the same name, took $1.8m in Spain and $1.1m in France and is yet to open in the UK and Germany.

Lotte’s Arrow, The Ultimate Weapon continued to do good business in Korea, taking a further $6.3m from 609 screens at a strong $10,289 for a $21.9m cumulative, but The Weinstein Co’s Spy Kids: All The Time In The Wforld didn’t catch fire in its five markets, taking only $4.2m.

FilmNation’s Pedro Almodovar thriller The Skin I Live In opened in three territories on $1.5m, a healthy $1.4m of which came from France.
