Documentary producer Simon Chinn and his cousin and showrunner Jonathan Chinn have launched the London and Los Angeles-based small-screen documentary company.

The Lightbox principals have signed a deal with Xbox Entertainment Studios for a documentary series and the first project will look at the events surrounding Atari’s unsuccessful ET video game. X-Men: The Last Stand writer Zak Penn will direct.

The Chinns are currently developing product for TV, VOD and digital platforms in the US and UK.

“Our careers have taken different paths, but we have always had a strongly shared sensibility and approach to non-fiction – mine at the more commercial end of feature documentary, Jonathan’s at the more thoughtful end of reality,” said Simon Chinn, who founded Red Box Films and won Oscars for Man On Wire and Searching For Sugar Man.

“I am incredibly excited by the creative opportunities that exist to break new ground and find new audiences for our content. Being able to work with top industry talent is what will set us apart.”

“With so many new distribution opportunities now available, our ability to combine the highest quality content with broad commercial appeal will, we hope, make us stand out for a whole array of buyers hungry for the best in non-fiction programming,” added Jonathan Chinn.
