Disney
Christopher Robin, director Marc Forster’s film based on A. A. Milne’s classic Winnie-the-Pooh children’s novels, starring Ewan McGregor alongside a CGI Winnie (voiced by Jim Cummings) got underway in the UK with a £2.4m weekend from 658 sites, an average of £3,647. With previews, the film is on £2.5m.
It’s no Paddington, but Disney will be happy for the film to land number one in a tight marketplace.
Incredibles 2 fell 43% this weekend, still adding £1.4m to take it to £48.6m so far. That’s now the second-biggest animation release of all time in the UK, surpassing Shrek 2, and only behind fellow Pixar title Toy Story 3 (£74m).
Ant-Man And The Wasp fell 49%, adding £1.2m for £13.6m to date.
Universal
Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again is up to £54.5m after its fifth weekend, adding £2.2m this session, a drop of 39%. The film is encroaching on the total of its predecessor, £68.6m, but will need strong legs over the remainder of its run to reach that number.
Elsewhere for Universal, Unfriended: Dark Web is up to £498,210 in the UK, documentary Pope Francis: A Man Of His Word is up to £67,271, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is still running on £41.4m, Skyscraper is up to £5.3m, and The First Purge is now on £5.9m
Warner Bros
The Meg fell 43% in its second weekend, adding £2.1m for a cume total of £8.5m so far.
Teen Titans Go! To the Movies is up to £1.4m after adding £126,000 this weekend.
Sony Pictures
Denzel Washington-starring action sequel The Equalizer 2 got underway with £1.9m in the UK from 490 sites, an average of £3,878. With previews, the film is on £2m. The Fri-Sun figure matches the opening of the original, which also hit £1.9m in September 2014, eventually topped out at £6.9m.
Hotel Transylvania 3 was 38% down this weekend, adding £965,000 for £14m to date.
Paramount
Mission: Impossible - Fallout added £1.2m this weekend and is now up to £20m in the UK.
Entertainment Film Distributors
Comedy The Festival opened to £836,413 this weekend from 408 sites, an average of £2,050. Including previews from Tuesday-Thursday (Aug 14-16), the film is up to £1.4m.
That looks a disappointing number for the title, which comes from The Inbetweeners team of Iain Morris and Joe Thomas. While no one would have been expecting The Festival to match the record-breaking numbers of The Inbetweeners and its sequel, which did £13.2m and £12.5m debut weekends respectively, Entertainment will have been hoping that the four years since The Inbetweeners 2 would have created more of an appetite for similar fare.
While the totals of The Inbetweeners (£45m) and The Inbetweeners 2 (£33.4m) look like unreachable targets for The Festival, strong word of mouth could give this one a long tail.
20th Century Fox
The Darkest Minds added £80,000 from 240 sites and is up to £849,023.
Curzon
Xavier Beauvois’ French-language wartime drama The Guardians, which premiered at Toronto in 2017, opened to £35,218 from 22 locations.
Apostasy is up to £271,483 while doc Leaning Into The Wind: Andy Goldsworthy is up to £25,990.
Park Circus
The re-releases of Mildred Pierce took £7,944 from 10 sites and The Women took £4,274 from 2 sites.
Altitude
Sicilian Ghost Story is up to £57,546 in the UK.
Thunderbird
The Heiresses grossed £17,266 this weekend and it is currently sitting at £78,013.
