The Toronto-based sales and distribution company has picked up international rights to Rafa Lara’s historical epic Cinco De Mayo: The Battle and will commence sales in Cannes.

Raven Banner claims the $10m action-adventure is the biggest budget Mexican film to date and was released on a record 500 prints in Mexico and went on to gross more than $1m. Last weekend Cinco De Mayo opened theatrically in the US through Lionsgate. Raven Banner holds all rights excluding Mexico, the US and Latin America pay TV,

Raven Banner has scheduled a May 16 market screening on Cinco De Mayo: The Battle, which chronicles the story of Mexico’s Battle of Puebla against the French invaders. Lara’s previous film La Milagrosa sold to more than 50 territories.

Angelica Aragon, Kuno Becker, Mario Zaragoza, Liz Gallardo and Christian Vasquez star. Paco Gallastegui and Lara produced and Televisa CEO Emilio Azcarraga served as executive producer.

Raven Banner managing partners Michael Paszt and James Fler negotiated the deal with the producers.

“This is such an ambitious epic with flawless production values,” said Paszt. “We’re honoured to be bringing the biggest Mexican film of all time to the international marketplace.”
