Sony’s Michael Jackson tribute film This Is Ithas grossed more than $4.4m in less than 24 hours since opening last night (October 27) in North America.
The tribute film took an estimated $2.2m on Tuesday night and according to the studio more than matched that amount in “explosive” matinee screenings on Wednesday.
Sony is launching This Is It in 97 overseas territories and will release international estimates on Thursday.
Jackson’s concert choreographer Kenny Ortega directed the film, which features rehearsal footage as the late entertainer prepared to embark on a sold-out farewell 50-date residency at London’s 02 Arena.
