Sony Pictures Releasing International’s (SPRI) overseas champion The Ugly Truth will need to rely on strong holdovers to fend off the challenge of Disney/Pixar’s Up this weekend.

The Ugly Truth has amassed $69.5m so far and should have little trouble coasting towards the $75m mark, but the question is whether it has enough in the tank to stay ahead of Up.

However it is conceivable that both releases will be eclipsed by the Japanese launch of Astro Boy, the long awaited adaptation of Osamu Tezuka’s famous animated property. Summit International handled overseas sales except for Japan, Hong Kong and China.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures International’s (WDSMPI) Pixar hit has amassed $233m and opens in the UK, Benelux and Finland. Those debuts allied to strong holdovers should see the family film overtake SPRI’s Terminator Salvation on $246m by Sunday to become the fifth biggest overseas Hollywood film of the year-to-date.

WDSMPI’s family title G-Force on $103m arrives in Spain and the Philippines, while sci-fi thriller Surrogates has grossed $32.5m and is projected to finish on roughly twice as much as North America. The Proposal remains the number one international romantic comedy of the year so far on $144.5m with Japan to come on October 15.

SPRI opens the number one US release Zombieland in the UK and Russia this weekend, while District 9 has taken $64.3m through all distributors and touches down in Holland.

Drama Julie & Julia opens in Australia and Sweden and has taken $9.3m, while the comedy Year One arrives in Mexico and the arthouse sci-fi release Moon opens in Australia and Spain. Fox International’s family release Aliens In The Attic on $29.8m opens in Germany on October 8 followed by Austria a day later. The Dolphin opens across Latin America and arrives in Argentina on October 8 and Mexico and Brazil on October 9.

Romance 500 Days Of Summer has taken $12.3m and opens in Hong Kong and Singapore on October 8, while horror comedy Jennifer’s Body stands at $2.7m, X-Men Origins: Wolverine has reached $192.9m, and Ice Age: Dawn Of The Dinosaurs stands at $680.1m.

Universal/UPI’s Funny People has grossed $16.3m and opens in France, French-speaking Switzerland and Belgium on October 7, while another comedy, Couples Retreat, opens day-and-date with North America in Australia and New Zealand on October 8.

Inglourious Basterds has amassed $145.4m and opens across much of Latin America including Mexico and Brazil on October 9.
