Warner Bros/Legendary’s Dune and Disney’s Encanto lead the feature film field on six nominations apiece as the Visual Effects Society (VES) announced the contenders on Tuesday (January 18).
Dune is in the running for the top award of Outstanding Visual Effects In A Photoreal Feature, Outstanding Created Environment In A Photoreal Feature and Outstanding Model In A Photoreal Or Animated Project, among others.
Among the categories where Encanto earned a nomination are Outstanding Visual Effects In An Animated Feature, Outstanding Animated Character In An Animated Feature and Outstanding Created Environment In An Animated Feature.
The Jungle Book in 2017 was the last film that won the VES’s top award and went on to claim the special effects Oscar. This has happened a total of three times in the last decade, with the other winners being Life Of Pi in 2013 and Gravity a year later.
The Society is considering date and format for its 20th annual awards show amid the Omicron surge. VES chair Lisa Cooke said the nominees embodied “best in class work that elevates the art of storytelling and exemplifies the spirit of adaptation and ingenuity – talents that have kept audiences engaged and uplifted, now, more than ever”.
