The Council of Europe film fund Eurimages is aiming to create a fund for the international co-production of TV drama series to launch in the second half of 2023.

The idea is for the TV fund to operate in a similar fashion to the organisation’s long-standing film fund which has backed multiple films in official selection in Cannes this year.

They include Ukrainian director Maksym Nakonechnyi’s Un Certain Regard entry Butterfly Kiss and competition entries Holy Spider by Ali Abbasi, Tori And Lokita by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardennes, Close by Lukas Dhont, Triangle Of Sadness by Ruben Ostlund and Boy From Heaven by Tarik Saleh.

The new TV fund would run entirely separately from the film fund although details of how it will be financed have not yet been revealed Eurimages is in discussions with member states about a pilot programme.

“It’s our duty to reflect the way the industry is changing. We need to try to respond to the needs of our stakeholders who are, among others, the independent producers,” said Susan Newman-Baudais, executive director of Eurimages.

The fund is looking to strengthen the market position of the indie producers  and may enable them to hold onto “a certain level of IP”, said Newman-Baudais.  “With lots of luck, if everything goes well, we would hope to launch in the second half of next year. We’re working quickly. It’s definitely on the horizon.”
