Rezo takes international rights to Cristian Jimenez’s second feature

Rezo has taken international rights to Chilean director Cristian Jimenez’s second feature Bonsai, which is screening in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes.

Described by Rezo as a story of ‘love, books and plants’, the romance-drama is based on Alejandro Zambra’s award-winning novel about a young writer who turns to one of his old love affairs for creative inspiration.

Bonsai follows Jiménez’ debut feature Optical Illusions, which scored a number of sales and was nominated for the Tokyo Grand Prix.

Rezo’s Head of International Sales Sebastien Chesneau said: “We strongly believe that Bonsai is a film that stays with you, and after Optical Illusions, it’s clear that Cristián Jiménez is one of the young international talents to be watched.”

Bonsai is a co-production between Chile’s Jirafa and French outfit Rouge International. The script was developed at the Cannes Cinéfondation Residence in 2010.
