Global Screen has picked up Simon Ennis’ first documentary Lunarcy! [pictured] which will have its world premiere as part of the TIFF Docs section in Toronto on Sept 8.
The production, by LA-based Citizen Jones, follows a disparate group of dreamers and schemers who have all devoted their lives to the Moon and the idea of lunar colonization.
The Munich-based sales and distribution joint venture between Telepool and Bavaria Media will handle international sales, except for Canada where the rights have already been acquired by distributor Films We Like.
Global Screen has also picked up Nina Grosse’s drama The Weekend, starring Sebastian Koch and Katja Riemann, which will have its world premiere in competition at Montreal World Film Festival (Aug 23 – Sept 3) on next Sunday (26).
The UFA Cinema production is based on the eponymous novel by Bernhard Schlink (The Reader) about a former RAF terrorist who is released from prison and spends his first weekend with friends from the past, including his former lover and her husband. As the tension mounts, it only takes one spark to trigger an eruption of hostility.
The Montreal festival will also present another Global Screen title out of competition, the Swiss box-office hit The Foster Boy by Markus Imboden, which also stars Katja Riemann.
Meanwhile, shooting began yesterday (21) on Pepe Danquart’s adaptation of Uri Orlev’s bestseller Run, Boy, Run! whose international distribution will be handled by Global Screen.
The German-French co-production between Bittersuess Pictures, Ciné-Sud Promotion and Vandertastic has attracted A Company Filmproduktion, Erfttal Film- und Fernsehproduktion, B.A. Produktion and Quinte Film as production partners and will be shot in two blocks – one until mid-Oct and a winter one in Dec 2012.
The child actor Andy Tkacz has been cast in the lead as the nine-year-old Jurek who manages to escape from the Warsaw Ghetto and survives in the forests until the end of the war. Jeanette Hain, Rainer Bock and Itay Tiran also star.
According to Danquart, the film is “a moving authentic story without pessimism, a story about true strength, an homage to all children who are still fighting for survival today in many parts of the world.”
In a separate development, Global Screen announced that US independent distributor Music Box Films had acquired theatrical rights for Boris Rodriguez’s Canadian-Danish horror comedy Eddie – The Sleepwalking Cannibal and Baran bo Odar’s crime thriller The Silence, which had its world premiere in Locarno.
