
Harry Lighton, the Pillion filmmaker who won Monday night’s Gotham in New York for best adapted screenplay, thanked A24 for getting his travel arrangements back on track after hearty Bifas celebrations In London the night before.
“There was a British awards ceremony last night [Bifas] and I got carried away and missed my flight,” Lighton told the audience at Ciprianis for the 35th annual Gotham Film Awards. “So I want to thank A24 for being kind about me being hopeless and booking me a new flight.”
Lighton, whose film collected four Bifas on Sunday, accepted the award from Amanda Seyfried and Stellan Skarsgard, whose son Alexander Skarsgard stars in Pillion.
In a strong night for the UK, Akinola Davies Jr. won breakthrough director for the UK’s Oscar submission My Father’s Shadow and also referenced Sunday’s Bifas.
“Yesterday I won an award in London,” Davies Jr. said. “I forgot to thank my producers, so I’m not going to make the same mistake twice. I want to shout [out to] Rachel Dargavel and Funmbi Ogunbanwo.”
Davies Jr. also paid tribute to his family: “My older brother’s in the room. He knew, when I was broke 10 years ago calling him, to send me money. Hopefully he won’t need to send me money tonight.”
Later in the ceremony, Sopé Dìrísù won the outstanding lead performance award for My Father’s Shadow. Davies Jr. accepted the award on his behalf.
