‘Green Book’

Three days before the Academy announces its nominations, the Producers Guild of America (PGA) anointed Green Book with its top feature prize in Los Angeles on Saturday (19).

The award of the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures to Jim Burke, Charles B. Wessler, Brian Currie, Peter Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga is a major boost: 20 of the 29 PGA winners have gone on to win the best picture Oscar.

The Participant Media / Universal Pictures awards contender stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali as an Italian American bouncer-driver and a jazz pianist who bond on a concert tour of the Deep South in the 1960s.

Green Book won best musical or comedy at the Golden Globes earlier in the month and, in light of the audience award at Toronto and the National Board of Review win, Saturday’s triumph makes it the front-runner when the ultimate best feature award of the season is handed out at the 91st Academy Awards on February 24.

Won’t You Be My Neighbor? distributed by Universal’s Focus Features stablemate took best documentary honours, while Golden Globe winner Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse brought Sony more awards season kudos, with the Annie Awards looming on the horizon.

In the television categories, FX series The Americans (Season 6) took the Norman Felton Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television – Drama; The Danny Thomas Award for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television – Comedy went to Amazon Studios’ The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel (Season 2); and HBO’s Fahrenheit 451 earned the Award for Outstanding Producer of Streamed or Televised Motion Pictures.
