UPDATED: In the first major on-site deal at AFM, Lionsgate has pounced on North America, the UK and select territories on the upcoming Gerard Butler action thriller The Plane.
The studio issued a press releasing confirming Screen’s exclusive on Thursday evening (7), and said the other territories are Latin America and India.
MadRiver International handles sales on the project, which takes place in real time and stars Butler as a commercial pilot who must keep his passengers and crew safe after he lands his stricken aircraft in a war zone and finds himself caught between multiple militia who are planning to take the craft and its passengers hostage.
Lionsgste and Butler parntered on the summer independent hit Angel Has Fallen, which grossed $69m in North America, rising to $133m worldwide including $64m through Millennium Media’s international licensees.
CAA Media Finance represents US rights on The Plane and the producers have earmarked a production start in the second quarter of 2020.
Charles Cumming and JP Davis (Violence Of Action) wrote the screenplay based on the book by Cumming.
Di Bonaventura Pictures’ Lorenzo di Bonvaventura and Mark Vahradian will produce alongside MadRiver Pictures’ Marc Butan and Ara Keshishian, and Butler and Alan Siegel through their G-BASE.
Lionsgate’s Jason Constantine oversaw the deal for Lionsgate along with Eda Kowan and John Biondo.
