‘Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again’

Universal

In its third week on release, musical sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again triumphed over the competition again, dropping 43% with £4.1m. The film now sits on a hugely impressive £39.3m, though still some way shy of Mamma Mia!’s £68.6m.

Overall, the majority of the box ofice chart recorded substantial drops this week as the renewed good weather took its toll on cinemas.

Elsewhere for Universal, The First Purge added £172,871 for £5.5m to date, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom posted £166,187 for £41m, and Skyscraper is up to £5.1m after adding £118,809.

Disney

Ant-Man And The Wasp rolled out into 586 sites this weekend, taking £3.8m. Including previews of £1.2m, the film’s official opening is a soft-looking £5m.

That’s not a vintage return for a Marvel film, which often open north of £10m. The total falls short of titles such as Thor (£5.4m) and Iron Man (£5.5m), only topping The Incredible Hulk (£3.3m) and Captain America (£3m) in that superhero canon.

Incredibles 2 dropped one place to fourth in the chart in its fourth week, falling 54% with £2.4m taking it to £40m so far. The film is now closing in on the total takings of Finding Dory (£43m) and Toy Story 2 (£44.3m) and should soon become Pixar’s second-highest-grossing title in the UK of all time behind Toy Story 3.

Paramount

In its second week on release, Mission: Impossible – Fallout echoed the rest of the chart by dropping 55% with £2.5m. The action sequel is now up to £13.3m, still a fair way behind Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation’s franchise record of £21.2m.

Sherlock Gnomes is up to £9.1m after adding £43,000 this weekend.

Sony Pictures

Hotel Transylvania 3: A Monster Vacation added £1.5m in its second weekend, taking it to £7.8m to date. The film has plenty of ground to make up to reach the second film’s £20.7m total.

Leave No Trace is up to £338,000 in the UK.

Warner Bros

Children’s’ superhero animation Teen Titans Go! To the Movies got underway with £388,000 from 460 sites this weekend, an average of £844.

Ocean’s 8 is up to £10.9m after posting £58,000, while Hotel Artemis added £14,000 for a total of £695,000 to date.

Studiocanal

French family animation The Big Bad Fox And Other Tales opened to £11,371 (including previews) from 41 sites.

The Producers, a one-off event cinema release of the theatre play, took £35,131 from 140 sites.

Curzon

In its second week, indie drama Apostasy added £30,200. Including midweek takings, the film now sits on £145,194 to date.

Vertigo Releasing

The Escape, starring Gemma Arterton and Dominic Cooper, started with £21,797 from 24 sites, plus £2,479 in previews, for £24,276.

Altitude

Sicilian Ghost Story, the Italian fantasy drama from directors Fabio Grassadonia and Antonio Piazza which premiered in Cannes Critics’ Week last year, opened in 19 sites this weekend, grossing £13,393. Including previews, the film sits on £22,342 so far.

Picturehouse Entertainment

First Reformed is up to £296,003 after four weeks on release. The film added £12,664 this weekend.

20th Century Fox

The Greatest Showman, now on release for 32 weeks in the UK, was up 55% this weekend with £12,104. The film now sits on £47m.

Deadpool 2 is up to £32.7m, Sanju is up to £1.3m.

Park Circus

Brett Haley’s US music drama Hearts Beat Loud, starring Nick Offerman and Kiersey Clemons, took £10,469 from 16 sites this weekend.
